WORD OFF!

this week's battle:

skulduggery: /skuhl-duhg-uh-ree/

1. dishonorable proceedings; mean dishonesty or trickery
2. an instance of dishonest or deceitful behavior; trick

vs.

invective: /in-'vek-tiv/

of, relating to, or characterized by insult or abuse

last week's word winner:

luculent

i wasn't impressed with last week's choices myself. such that i don't even remember which one i voted for. speaking of voting, my guy is ahead by something on the order of 910 votes but the seattle mayoral race is still too close to call. all things being equal - always vote for the guy with the beard.

  1. I noticed that all of these words are from the Dictionary.com word of the day o.o

  2. yes. as our good friend (although you've probably never met him and neither have i) matthew was kind enough to point out to me (http://www.flickr.com/photos/22696172@N03/4079499516/sizes/o/) via email back in september, the entries do indeed come from merriam-webster.com and dictionary.com.

to further elaborate: the reason i don't run feeds for both sites in the toolbar so you can see the WOTD is that merriam-webster doesn't have that available and it would be unfair to run dictionary.com's and not theirs. because although MW routinely pisses me off, i still use their stuff.

i also provide links to the sites for every entry so you can go the respective site and see for yourself. when i do that i link to the word page itself not the WOTD page because if you looked at an clicked on an entry a week later it would show the WOTD for the day you're visiting the page and they may not coincide and people would be confused and angry and send me emails.

i'm sorry if you got the impression that this is a "word of the day" site. as in, i am picking words to be the WOTD. i leave that to the professionals. i, like most bloggers, don't do a whole crapload of work but rather compile and mangle the work of others for about 20 minutes a day.

the point is i like the WOTD. a good WOTD can rattle your very soul while at the same time a bad one can fill you with homer-simpson-esqe rage, e.g. it's still rage but it's kinda fun to watch. i try to use the WOTD as a jumping off point to make you laugh at either my joy, anger, indignance, illumination or what the hell ever else the word triggers in me. and i mean this with all sincerity panda even though we've never actually met and probably won't, i hope you did laugh or that when you read it in the future with the a readjusted frame of mind as to what my intent was and is, that you will laugh then.

this site is a work in progress and i am constantly adjusting the format in response to what the readers want. so if you or anyone else has a suggestion of how to make the references clearer or somehow more obvious, i would be glad to incorporate them into the site.

    thanks for the feedback.
